It’s been a long winter for everybody — in particular, workers with local street departments.

They’ve been the ones out all hours of the night plowing the streets during the many snowstorms that have swept through the region.

It’s also been a tough winter for the streets themselves — potholes seem to be popping up everywhere right now, causing headaches for drivers and street departments alike.

Things are no different in Lexington. Street Department Supervisor Mark Wallace said the amount of moisture in the ground along with the freezing and thawing have left many streets in bad shape.

“The weather has been wreaking havoc on the streets. The moisture has been a big deal, and the freezing and thawing. The alleys and gravel portions are really what we’re dealing with right now, along with the potholes,” said Wallace. “It’s been pretty tough on the streets. The surface has cracked where it hasn’t before.”
