On a bitter cold day in October, several Wal-Mart associates from the Higginsville store gathered in the theater parking lot in Lexington to participate in a walk to benefit the Lafayette County Cancer Coalition.
Elva Dean Erdman had recruited several of her fellow associates, some of whom were also cancer survivors, to join her in the VAP program (Volunteering Always Pays). The associates walked, crocheted hats and scarves, and did other volunteer projects to accumulate the hours which qualified their group to provide a check for $1,000. The associates presented the check to Dot Renno, secretary of the cancer coalition. Renno stated the organization would use the donate for transportation assistance to Lafayette County cancer patients and also for food supplement to be given to these patients.
